It’s no surprise that ‘sustainable’ is a home interiors buzzword, we all want to invest in furniture that not only looks great, but has low environmental impact.
At SUNS Lifestyle, sustainable means more to us than just the material and where it comes from, we care about the lifespan of our products too believing that buying better should mean buying less often.
That’s why we’re big fans of using teak in our outdoor dining and lounge collections. Not only does it look great, it’s also one of the most durable and water-resistant hardwoods, able to withstand the elements whilst keeping its good-looks all year round. It’s no coincidence that it was the shipbuilders choice for centuries.
The teak we use in our furniture is always certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC. Meaning it comes from forests that are responsibly managed to environmental and economic standards. So you can relax on our Kota lounge collection or entertain at the Ovada table knowing that they not only look good, they’re feel-good products too.
FSC-certified sources are identified against 10 principles and 57 criteria to ensure the timber from these forests entails a responsible supply chain, supports sustainable forest management, reducing greenhouse gases, protecting wildlife, and preventing deforestation.
The FSC also ensures that the communities surrounding these forests and plantations benefit too as part of these initiatives. When shopping, always look for the FSC universal logo to check that the timber is credible and FSC-certified.

MAKING THE GRADE
It’s hard to see from the surface, but not all teak is the same quality. Inferior teak products won’t last as long and don’t have the same water repellency due to the absence of natural oils. We use FSC-certified high grade teak, taken from the outer heartwood of a sustainably managed mature tree that is at least 20 years old. You can’t beat the quality and we couldn’t imagine furniture like our Madre table without it. Our teak is uniform in finish, colour, and hardness plus it’s high in the natural oils that protect it from outdoor elements like rain, mould, and wood-eating insects. Perfect for outdoor furniture.

LIKE A FINE WINE
Not only is teak easy to care for, it also ages beautifully – turning a smooth silvery-grey over time. Regular cleaning prevents dirt from building up and once a year, we’d recommend using a soft scrub brush and a mixture of mild washing-up soap and water to clean your furniture. Teak sealants can also help prevent wood damage and keep your furniture looking honey-coloured for longer.
