Some pergolas are chosen from an existing manufacturer's catalogue, given a new name and brought to market with relatively few changes.
Our latest Luxe pergola has taken a different route, developed around what we have learned from previous models and the feedback we have gathered along the way. That first-hand experience has shaped the product.
Over the past six years, we have made more than 20 adaptations to our pergolas, covering everything from product features and packaging to engineering, design and structural strength.
We have also completed more than 7,500 professional pergola installations. Seeing how the products behave in real gardens tells us far more than a specification sheet alone: where extra strength is useful, how drainage performs, what makes installation easier and which features customers actually notice once they start living with the pergola.
In other words, the product has been refined through use, installation and feedback rather than chosen simply because it looks good in a brochure.

A cheaper pergola can be tempting when two products look similar online. The risk is that the saving only exists at the point of purchase. If a lower-cost structure needs replacing sooner, it can become the more expensive option over time. For something you expect to live with for years, it makes more sense to compare what is actually included, how the pergola is built and whether it suits the way you want to use the space.
Not All Aluminium Pergolas Are Built the Same
Dimensions and colour are easy to compare. The harder part is working out how substantial the structure really is and how much aluminium has been used where it matters.
One useful comparison is the scale of the frame itself. Our premium Luxe Pergola Collection uses substantial 120mm aluminium legs.
Across important areas of the roof frame, we use a 2mm-thick aluminium profile gauge. It is the kind of detail that is easy to miss when you are comparing products from photographs alone.
Many comparable pergolas use around 1.5mm aluminium in these areas, so ours is roughly half a millimetre thicker. On paper that may not sound like much, but repeated across the structure it represents a meaningful difference in the amount of material used.
That extra material helps make the frame more rigid, with less flex and greater overall strength and stability - particularly useful when the pergola is exposed to wind and the changeable British weather.
So the heavier construction is not there for appearance alone; it has a practical job to do.
A Completely Redesigned Leg Boot for Greater Stability
As with any construction project, everything depends on getting the foundations right. If the connection to the ground is weak or inaccurate, the stability of the whole structure can be compromised.
A traditional footplate at the base of each post is common on many pergolas.
For the latest Luxe design, we replaced that approach with a completely redesigned leg boot.
The boot is bolted to the prepared surface first, then the pergola leg slots over it. That gives the structure a strong connection to the base while keeping the finished installation clean and seamless.
For the customer, the benefit is straightforward: greater stability and a fixing system designed to keep the pergola firmly secured in more demanding conditions.
There is a trade-off: it leaves very little room for error during installation. Each boot has to line up precisely with the pergola legs before it is drilled and bolted down, often to within millimetres. That is one reason pergola-specific installation experience matters.
Drainage Designed Into the Structure
Drainage is another area that rarely gets much attention until there is a problem.
Rainwater runs through the pergola and down inside the legs, so those internal channels need to stay clear.
On our latest design, mesh protection at the top of each leg helps prevent leaves and other debris from entering the drainage system from the roof.
At the bottom, the system is designed to let water escape efficiently instead of allowing it to collect around the base of the structure.
When comparing pergolas, ask how debris is kept out of the drainage channels and whether the system can be accessed and maintained over time. It is not a feature that will jump out in a photograph, but it can make day-to-day ownership much easier.
A pergola has to live outside all year, through sun, rain, wind and constant changes in temperature. The finish therefore has to do more than look good on installation day.
Our premium pergola frames are triple powder-coated, adding protection against UV exposure, weathering and colour fade.
Aluminium already has practical advantages outdoors: it is rust resistant, strong and relatively easy to look after. The triple-coated finish is there to help the pergola continue to look at home in the garden long after the installation is complete.

Choose a Roof That Works With Your Home and Garden
Most modern aluminium pergolas use a louvred roof. By rotating the blades, you can adjust the balance of sun, shade and airflow, then close them when you want more shelter.
This works extremely well for many gardens, which is why Suns Lifestyle offers both manual and electric louvred pergolas.
For some gardens, however, a different roof design makes more sense.
You may have seen electric louvred pergolas where the blades tilt but remain positioned above the space even when fully open. Our electric retractable pergolas allow the roof panels to concertina open, creating a much more open space in the pergola roof.
When the weather is warm and clear, opening the roof gives you much more direct sunlight and a clearer view of the sky. If conditions change, it can be closed again for shade or shelter.
That can make a noticeable difference when the pergola is positioned directly outside the back of the house.
Take a north-facing garden, for example. A roof that remains over the space even when open can reduce daylight into the rooms behind it. A retractable roof can open much more fully, helping light reach both the pergola and the back of the house when the weather allows.
So the choice between louvred and retractable is not only about how the pergola works overhead. Garden orientation, position and the effect on natural light inside the house should all come into the decision.

For customers who use compatible smart-home technology, the pergola can also be incorporated into wider home automation where the chosen system supports it.
Depending on the smart-home system and how it is configured, that could include simple automations such as turning the pergola lights on at sunset or closing the roof when rain is expected.
The point is to make the pergola easier to live with, not to add technology for the sake of it. Useful automation can take care of everyday adjustments and help protect features such as electric screens when the weather changes.
More Than One Type of Side Screen
The roof handles shade and shelter from above, but what happens around the sides can have just as much impact on how comfortable the space feels.
Sun direction, prevailing wind, neighbouring properties and the way you plan to use the garden will all influence which sides, if any, you choose to enclose.
Some pergolas give you little more than a basic pull-down screen. That can be enough in some settings, but it gives you less freedom to tailor the structure to the garden.

Good pergola installation starts before the installation team arrives.
The base has to be suitable, the dimensions need to work and there needs to be a clear plan for any screens, walls, lighting, furniture or outdoor kitchen units that will sit in or around the structure.
After you place your order, Suns Lifestyle can include a site survey where required at no additional cost. It gives our team a chance to review the proposed position, confirm dimensions and identify any practical considerations before the installation date.
We can also provide floor plans, technical information and groundwork guidance so you or your contractor know what needs to be prepared and what our installation team will take care of.

A pergola is a substantial outdoor structure, so accurate measuring, positioning and fixing are essential.
Installation standards vary between suppliers. Before you buy, it is worth knowing who will install the pergola, how it will be fixed and exactly what is included.
In practical terms, installing a pergola is much closer to a small construction project than putting together a piece of flat-pack garden furniture.
The leg-boot system is a good example. The setting-out has to be precise before any drilling takes place so the finished structure sits square, operates properly and is securely fixed to the prepared surface.
Having completed more than 7,500 professional installations, our teams have worked across a wide range of garden layouts, surfaces and property types.
They deliver, assemble and secure the pergola to the prepared base, fit the chosen screens and accessories, show you how everything works and complete a final sign-off. Packaging is removed and the area is left clean when the work is finished.
When comparing suppliers, ask who will actually be carrying out the installation, how much experience they have with pergolas specifically and whether secure fixing to the prepared base is included.
That experience matters when conditions are less forgiving, and it also means one team is accountable for the finished installation.

A Complete Outdoor Room, Not Just a Structure
The best pergola layout starts with what you actually want to do underneath it.
A dining table, lounge set or outdoor kitchen all take up space differently, so the furniture plan can have a direct impact on the pergola size and configuration that works best.
Garden orientation matters as well. Knowing where north, south, east and west sit will help you understand where shade falls and when you are likely to get sun beneath the pergola.
Because we also specialise in luxury outdoor furniture and modular outdoor kitchens, we can look at the whole area with you rather than treating the pergola as a standalone purchase.
That could mean leaving enough room to move comfortably around a dining table, creating a more sheltered lounge area or placing an outdoor kitchen so the person cooking is still part of the conversation.
Where space allows, we will often suggest looking at a 3.6m-wide pergola rather than a 3m model if furniture or an outdoor kitchen is going underneath. That extra 600mm can make a surprising difference to how comfortably the finished space works.

If you are comparing pergola brands, look past the headline price and compare what is actually included in the structure and service.
A few useful questions to ask are:
• How substantial is the frame, and what thickness of aluminium is used in the key structural areas?
• How is the pergola anchored to the ground, and what type of footplate or leg-boot system is used?
• How is rainwater managed, how is debris kept out of the drainage channels, and how can the system be maintained?
• What finish protects the aluminium from weathering, UV exposure and colour fade?
• Would a louvred or fully retractable roof work better for the orientation of your garden and the light entering your home?
• What side screens, walls and doors are available for sun control, privacy, wind protection and a more enclosed space?
• Can you see and operate full-sized pergolas before ordering?
• Who surveys and installs the pergola, how much pergola-specific experience do they have, and is secure fixing included?

• What support and aftercare are available once the pergola has been installed?
Those questions make it much easier to compare like for like.
A lower purchase price is not automatically better value if there are significant differences in the structure, engineering, flexibility, installation or support behind it.
